East Dorset celebrates

Our current exhibition celebrates seven decades of fun and festivities in East Dorset. Inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee year, it examines how local people have celebrated important local and national events since 1952.

The exhibition has been created with the support of the local community, who have shared their stories, reminiscences, photographs and memorabilia with the museum.

Celebrations covered include the Queen’s coronation and jubilees, carnivals held at Wimborne and Verwood, ‘The Magpies’ (Wimborne Town FC) historic win in the 1992 FA Vase final, and how we marked the millennium.

Exhibition interactives enable visitors to share their own favourite celebration memories, try different scents to discover what a celebration smells like to them, and enjoy party hits from the past 70 years.

Themed events and activities will run throughout the year across the whole museum site. Visit the exhibition, buy a commemorative mug from our shop, or eat a Jubilee muffin in our Tea Room.

‘Celebrate Nature’ in the museum’s garden by creating pieces of art from natural materials and posting pictures on social media. Our new ‘Artist in Residence’, Yvonne, will be at the museum every Friday morning throughout June and July to help and inspire any budding artists from toddlers to pensioners.

During 2022, the museum will celebrate other special anniversaries including 400 years of Dorset button making and the museum’s own 60th birthday.

We hope you will come and join us.
