‘Celebrating Ourselves’ Portrait Winners

Here at the Museum of East Dorset we are all about celebrating this year.  Celebrating friends, family, nature and of course the wonderful place we live in.  As part of these celebrations, we have recently run a competition to help us ‘Celebrate Ourselves’. We wanted children to look at themselves and think about how incredible and unique they were. Each has different skills, talents, hobbies, and career aspirations; the weird, wonderful and truly ambitious!

We had over a hundred entries, so the competition was fierce! From fire eating four-year-olds, nine year old pony riding champions, ten year old NASA enthusiasts, to eleven-year-old You-Tubing legends!  The lucky four winners were: Brooke (5) from Holy Trinity of England Primary, Oscar (7) from Milton on Stour Primary, Annabelle (9) from Merley First and Lucas (10) from Stickland School.

These well-deserved winners were invited into the museum to be presented with their certificates and prizes; kindly donated by local businesses: The Present Company, Tickles & Co and Tails from the Woods.  Town Mayor, Cllr Kelly Webb undertook her last official engagement and presented the certificates, alongside our Learning and Community Engagement Officer, Lara Longford. Afterwards, Wimborne’s town crier, Chris Brown announced the winners in his usual enthusiastic and raucous fashion!

The winning portraits can be viewed in the Museum’s front window, sitting pride of place alongside our grand, original print of Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1953.  Do please take a moment to stop outside and look. Or, come inside and view our new exhibition, ‘East Dorset Celebrates’- full of fantastic celebratory memorabilia from events throughout East Dorset. A selection of other portrait competition entries can be viewed in our tearoom. Why don’t you have a nice, hot cup of tea or slice of delicious cake while you there?
